I got into the story of the Pendle Witches from a visit to Lancaster Castle and the realisation that I used to live a stones throw from where they hung. The idea that this trial changed legal history by accepting evidence from children is astonishing bearing in mind what they were actually saying. 2 miles out of my hometown they are fracturing the land. Fracking is a very silly idea that involves drilling a long way down- then a long way across, then blowing bits of the land up to get at the gas that is down there. Where I live they are proposing to drill 6-800 big holes in the ground. There was apparently surprise on behalf of the company when the drilling caused a minor earthquake. And despite the fact that they didn't think it had a lot to do with them they suggested it probably wasn't all that dangerous. Which is lovely. However, it turns out they were wrong. Which leads me to consider whether they are dishonest, inept or both.
